New guidance from ECDC and EACS aims to raise standards of HIV care, focusing on lifelong health

The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and the European AIDS Clinical Society (EACS) have released two new modules in their European standards of care for HIV. These focus on:

  1. Starting antiretroviral therapy (ART): Recommending immediate treatment upon diagnosis, ideally within 7 days, to improve health outcomes and reduce transmission.
  2. Managing HIV and co-morbidities: Addressing the growing burden of non-communicable diseases (like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancers, and mental health issues) in people living with HIV, with a structured approach to integrated care.

These modules build on previous standards covering HIV prevention through PrEP and HIV testing. The goal is to ensure high-quality, person-centred care across Europe, supporting long, healthy lives for people with HIV. The standards also serve as a benchmark for healthcare systems and empower patients by clearly defining the care they should receive.
