Person-centered choice and mHealth support for same-day delivery of long-acting injectable cabotegravir (ImPrEP CAB Brasil): a prospective, open-label, multicenter, quasi-experimental implementation study
This study (ImPrEP CAB Brasil) evaluated preferences for HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) options and the impact of an mHealth tool on informed decision-making among young, PrEP-naïve individuals in Brazil.
Among 1,447 participants, the majority (82.9%) chose long-acting injectable cabotegravir (CAB-LA) over oral PrEP, indicating a strong preference for this option. Participants who received the mHealth tool in addition to standard counseling were more likely to choose CAB-LA compared to those receiving standard counseling alone.
Higher levels of decisional conflict were associated with a lower likelihood of choosing CAB-LA. The mHealth tool was highly accepted, with most users reporting satisfaction and finding it helpful in supporting their decision.
Overall, the findings suggest that CAB-LA is highly preferred in real-world settings and that mHealth tools can effectively support informed PrEP choices. These results support the broader and more equitable implementation of CAB-LA in HIV prevention programs.
